There are many levels for becoming a teacher in India, for example, teachers for primary schools or pre-primary schools. The qualifications for each are different. Let us have a look at them.

1. Pre-primary school teachers: Teachers in pre-primary schools deal with students between the ages of three and five. Being the first contact that students have with the outside world, these teachers play a very important role in the shaping of their personalities and also determine their methods of learning later on in life. Interesting activities like singing and painting are used to teach students the basics like numbers and alphabets that act as the stepping stone for further learning. One would need to have a diploma of two years in early childhood education or a one-year diploma in Nursery Teachers Training, to be eligible to be a teacher in pre-primary schools.

2. Primary school teachers: Teachers in primary schools deal with students between the ages of six and twelve. In primary school, students learn new things which will help them shape their cognitive, numerical and reasoning skills. Teachers are not expected to specialize in any particular subject for primary school and are instead expected to teach the students a broad range of subjects, starting from languages to computers. There is a lot of emphasis on interactive sessions as this helps students to develop their personality. In primary school, students develop basic skills and the foundation that will stay with them for their entire lives. To be eligible for this, the courses that can be done include Elementary Teacher Education (ETE) for 2

3. Secondary school teachers: These teachers are known as trained graduate teachers. They instruct students between 6th and 10th grade. Secondary school teachers are responsible for enhancing the students’ knowledge and helping them learn all the subjects in greater depth. Teachers have to specialize in specific subjects like social sciences, mathematics and languages. Teachers for these posts have to do B.Ed for two years.

4. Senior secondary school teachers: These teachers are also known as post graduate trained teachers. They are responsible for teaching 11th and 12th-grade students. Teachers are expected to teach all the concepts in detail and hold workshops as well. These teachers have to complete a Postgraduate degree in a teaching subject (non-professional, degree courses) and a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) degree.
